InsideOut and Head to Health

If you have any questions or need more information please contact us: headtohealth@insideoutinstitute.org.au

Eating disorders are serious and potentially life-threatening mental illnesses. There are currently around 1 million or more Australians living with an eating disorder and research shows early identification and treatment is key for successful treatment and good health outcomes.

FACT

Approximately one in five individuals with an eating disorder are accessing treatment or evidence-based care. Around 60% of clinicians are experiencing difficulty referring clients for treatment.

In Australia, clients with eating disorders have not had access to evidenced based treatment for a variety of reasons including a shortage of clinicians trained in the delivery of evidenced based treatments and that specialist services that do exist are typically concentrated in metropolitan areas so access to care in remote and rural areas can be inadequate or non-existent. The expense of treatment has also been identified as a significant barrier for individuals and their families.

Offering an online treatment(funded by the federal government) allows us to break through some of those geographical and socio-economic barriers by going digital. In addition, InsideOut’s upskilling initiative aims to support the health workforce and deliver evidence-based interventions to people with eating disorders – without having to undertake lengthy training programs.

As part of this initiative, with support of the PHNs, InsideOut we will provide:

• FREE access to drop-in Q&A sessions with our clinical experts for Head to Health and Referral (IAR) clinical staff. Upcoming sessions and how to register can be found below.

• FREE access to key InsideOut online learning programs for Head to Health and Intake Assessment and Referral (IAR) clinical staff.

• FREE access, via referral, to our proven digital therapies to Head to Health clients starting with Brief BEeT (a 4 session CBT program for people with binge purge disorders) supported by an Inside Out Clinician.

Access to Digital Therapies

What is Brief BEeT?

InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders are working with Head to Health lead agencies to provide Head to Health clients access to an evidenced based eTherapy (Online therapy) for rapid, early intervention for individuals experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of binge-eating or compensatory behaviour.

This brief supported CBT-based digital intervention (Brief BEeT) is a four-week program consisting of four, one-hour interactive multimedia sessions. It aims to rapidly decrease binge-eating episodes and compensatory behaviours by employing evidence-based behavioural techniques which work to establish structured, regular eating patterns, and challenge client fears about weight gain. Users are supported through online sessions by a pre-recorded therapist, who explains the core therapeutic principles. Additional digital tools, such as a Food Diary, facilitate self-monitoring of eating and associated behaviours. In addition to the eTherapy content, clients receive weekly 30-minute telehealth sessions with a support clinician, who guides the participant through completing the program.

What can clients expect?

Clients who are referred by our digital referral form will receive a 15–20-minute telephone intake call from an InsideOut staff member to confirm they meet eligibility criteria. If accepted they will need to see a GP and return some information after which they will receive their personal login and will be booked for their telehealth support sessions.
