The Holistic Understanding study is a longitudinal, biopsychosocial dense-sampling study designed to uncover the mechanisms underlying eating disorder development and maintenance, addressing gaps in current understanding that limit treatment efficacy.

Aims
Using multi-modal assessments (biological, psychological, cognitive, neuroimaging) and advanced analytics (e.g., cluster analysis, trajectory and network modelling, genomic sequencing), this study seeks to identify shared and distinct features as well as treatment targets. It is a longitudinal, biopsychosocial dense-sampling study designed to uncover the mechanisms underlying eating disorder development and maintenance. Findings will inform treatment personalisation and predictive markers of treatment response.

Background
The moderate efficacy of our existing treatments for eating disorders suggests we do not yet have a full understanding of what is core to these illnesses, nor how best to heal from them. Serving as the foundation for the broader Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre (AEDRTC) research program, this study facilitates recruitment and detailed phenotypic and genotypic profiling across eating disorder diagnoses. A subset of participants will be eligible for the of the TailorED clinical trial, targeting Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED), or the For Me clinical trial, targeting Anorexia Nervosa (AN).Background: The moderate efficacy of our existing treatments for eating disorders suggests we do not yet have a full understanding of what is core to these illnesses, nor how best to heal from them.
