Medicare Mental Health staff play a vital role in the early identification and treatment of eating disorders. Through the Upskilling Project, InsideOut offers a variety of options for Medicare Mental Health staff to increase knowledge and confidence in screening and managing eating disorders. All offerings through the Upskilling Project are free for Medicare Mental Health staff!
We know that there can be long wait times for people wanting to seek support for eating disorders. To address this, InsideOut has launched the eClinic providing any Australian struggling with disordered eating access to InsideOut's free eTherapies. These eTherapies can be used as a waitlist intervention before a person starts face-to-face sessions or employed as an adjunct to ongoing treatment for co-occurring issues.
Medicare Mental Health clinicians have access to additional options on the eClinic, including referring a client to InsideOut for support. When creating your Health Professionals eClinic account, remember to select 'Medicare Mental Health' as your workplace to unlock these additional options.
All health professionals must be registered with their relevant accrediting body to create a Health Professionals account on the eClinic. However, non-clinical staff can recommend an eTherapy to a client using the eClinic.
Brief BEeT is a brief, 4 session supported, online eTherapy for binge-eating. The program is aimed at people who might be experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of binge-eating disorder and/or bulimia nervosa.
Brief BEeT is available to people as a pure self-help option, or a clinician can connect or guide a client through the eTherapy.
To guide a person through the Brief BEeT program, you will first need to complete the 'Brief BEeT Guided Self-Help Training' online program (approximately 4 hours).
InsideOut's research studies show that clients have better retention and engagement when supported through Brief BEeT. By harnessing your therapeutic relationship and existing clinical skills, you can help clients stay engaged and achieve enhanced treatment outcomes while making your role in their recovery journey rewarding.
Guiding helps you become more at ease with conversations, weighing, monitoring and providing support for people living with an eating disorder.
The SkillED program is a self-paced, 11-module program for people experiencing restrictive or binge eating symptoms. The eTherapy consists of 5 'core' Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) sessions, with the remaining 6 modules able to be completed in any order the client chooses. Each session takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. All sessions are highly interactive, featuring psychoeducation about eating disorder symptoms, self-monitoring skills and practical tools to manage emotions and eating patterns.
SupportED is designed to help caregivers feel less overwhelmed and stressed by providing practical skills to support recovery. Clients can follow through the 5 module program from anywhere and at their own pace within the 3-month access period. Each session will take 60 minutes to complete. All sessions are highly interactive, providing information about available resources and treatment options, plus practical skills around how to provide support at mealtimes, strategies for avoiding and responding to conflict, and how carers can care for their own physical and mental health needs.
As Medicare Mental Health staff, you can refer your clients to InsideOut clinicians if you would like them to be guided through Brief BEeT but have not completed the guided training yourself. Referring your client to InsideOut means one of our clinical experts will conduct an intake assessment, liaise with the client's GP and guide them through Brief BEeT. If Brief BEeT is not the right eTherapy, clinicians will refer to a more appropriate eTherapy or treatment option.
