InsideOut Institute is Australia's national leader in eating disorder research. Our work spans clinical trials, digital innovation, and translation into real-world practice. Through global research partnerships, we are advancing knowledge to improve prevention, early intervention, and treatment for eating disorders, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
This clinical trial testing a new, personalised and highly supported approach to treating young people in the early stages of anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa. Using an innovative N-of-1 design, the trial aims to gain a deeper understanding of what works for each individual by tailoring treatment to their unique needs and addressing the underlying causes of their illness. Co-designed by people with lived experience, carers and experienced clinicians, the trial is recruiting 56 young people to help shape the future of more effective, person-centred care.
Individuals must be aged between 14–25 years old, with a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia nervosa, with an onset of symptoms within the past 3 years. Participants will need to be able to attend the trial site (University of Sydney, Camperdown NSW) for free weekly 2-hour therapy sessions for 6 months. For those unable to make it in person every time, telehealth may be available with discussion.
Participants will receive a free, six-month treatment program delivered by our highly experienced clinical team, personalised to suit the needs of the individual. The trial has been co-designed with people with lived experience and therapy modules are adapted from evidence-based treatments and personalised to you. Participants will receive weekly sessions with a psychologist, adaptive to your progress, data, and feedback. Participants will also receive personalised sessions with a dietitian, an optional session with a peer who can share their lived experience, and phone support. Family and carers will be involved and supported, where relevant. Participants of the For Me Trial will also be requested to complete activities involved in the The Holistic Understanding Study.
