Filling the Blanks: Co-designing a back-to-school communication template to support student eating disorder recovery

Research
A student in a denim jacket and watermelon-print shirt carries books and a backpack, with a blurred outdoor background.

The Filling the blanks study aims to co-design a communication template that aligns with school and health practices to enhance consistent communication and care planning for school students in treatment for an eating disorder.

Background: Returning to school after starting eating disorder treatment can be a time of intense change and stress for both a student and their family. Care planning for return to school, may involve stakeholders across primary care, public mental health, private providers and school staff, which can often complicate collaboration.

Aims:

  • Review current communication practices
  • Better understand return-to-school support needs
  • Develop a new communication template

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are over 18 and have a past experience of returning to school after eating disorder treatment, or being a family member, carer, or primary support person of someone returning to school after eating disorder treatment
  • Are a clinician or health service staff member currently working in a role that involves care for young people with eating disorders
  • Are a school staff member currently working in a role that involves back-to-school transitions

Participation will involve completing an online survey that will be available late July 2026.
