Webinar on Assessing and Managing Malnutrition in Adolescents with Restrictive Eating Disorders

Webinar on Assessing and Managing Malnutrition in Adolescents with Restrictive Eating Disorders

Last Reviewed: 03 Dec 2025

About this Webinar

Malnutrition in adolescents with restrictive eating disorders is common, complex, and sometimes under recognised. Understanding its presentation and impact is essential for dietitians working with adolescents and families experiencing eating disorders.

This webinar will provide an overview of the assessment and management of malnutrition in adolescents with restrictive eating disorders, including an introduction to:

  • Identifying malnutrition in adolescents (acute versus chronic)

  • Understanding the impact of malnutrition on acute medical stability, physical health, emotional wellbeing, growth, and puberty

  • Indicators for intensive nutrition interventions, such as NG feeding

  • Adolescent and family sensitive approaches to nutritional rehabilitation

  • Working collaboratively with families and the broader multidisciplinary team

Presented By: Kate Beckett, Senior Eating Disorders Dietitian, John Hunter Children’s Hospital

Kate has worked for more than 20 years with children, adolescents, adults, and families experiencing eating disorders, across a range of healthcare settings and multidisciplinary teams. Kate has extensive experience in acute medical stabilisation, nutritional rehabilitation, and collaborative, team-based approaches in paediatric and adolescent settings. She is trained in a range of therapeutic models, including Family-Based Treatment (FBT), CBT-E, SSCM, DBT, and ARFID-AR, and is experienced in integrating these frameworks into her dietetic practice. Kate has a particular interest in recognising and building on the strengths and resources within families, and in how multidisciplinary teamwork and family partnership can create the best outcomes for adolescents and their families.
