PROJECT

Review and Update of NSW Inpatient Management Guidelines for Adults with Eating Disorders

Public Policy & Service Development
A medical device, likely an infusion pump, is visible in the foreground, surrounded by various medical equipment and supplies in the background.

The 2014 ‘Guidelines for the Inpatient Management of Adult Eating Disorders in General Medical and Psychiatric Settings in NSW’ provides valuable guidance for clinicians in services across the state in the care of a person with an eating disorder in a medical setting. InsideOut Institute in partnership with NSW Health and medical and psychiatric leads across the state have embarked on a full review and redesign of this guideline. The revised guidelines will reflect current evidence and best practice, provide consistent admission criteria, and ensure people with eating disorders can access the appropriate level of inpatient care across NSW.

Background: The ‘Guidelines for the Inpatient Management of Adult Eating Disorders in General Medical and Psychiatric Settings in NSW’ was developed in 2014 and provides valuable guidance for clinicians in services across the state in the care of a person with an eating disorder in a medical setting. InsideOut Institute in partnership with NSW Health and medical and psychiatric leads across the state have embarked on a full review and redesign of this guideline.

Aims: The updated document will provide guidance for clinicians which aligns with up-to-date evidence informed and best practice care of a person with an eating disorder.

Outcomes: Guidance and consistency in admission criteria across the state to support people with an eating disorder to access care when they need and at the level of support needed

Impact: Supporting opening pathways to inpatient and hospital care for people with an eating disorder across NSW Health.
