Eating disorders across the female lifespan: Practical screening and management

Last Reviewed: 19 Aug 2026

InsideOut presents a discussion on eating disorders across the female lifespan. GP Dr Rachel Kalman and Clinical Psychologist Dr Ashlea Hambleton join host Dr Terri Foran to examine how eating disorders can emerge during key hormonal transitions, the ways they present in general practice, and practical approaches to early recognition and care:

  • Detect and manage eating disorders in women

  • Understand the importance of early intervention for eating disorders

  • Recognise increased eating disorder risk during hormonal transitions, including the perinatal period and (peri)menopause

  • Identify hidden eating disorders behind weight loss medication requests and seemingly unrelated symptoms

  • Use validated screening tools and recognise key red flags

Experts: Dr Rachel Kalman, GP Specialist and Clinical Research Officer
Dr Ashlea Hambleton, Clinical Psychologist and Research Officer

Host: Dr Terri Foran, Sexual Health Physician
