Health concerns associated with eating disorders, including ARFID:

  • Poor growth or stunted growth

  • Weight loss or not gaining weight or following weight curves in children and adolescents

  • Nutrition deficiencies of vitamins, minerals, and protein

  • Tube feeding or reliance on nutritional supplement drinks

  • Malnutrition

  • Underweight

  • Delayed puberty

  • Gastrointestinal problems, including constipation, bloating, pain


Malnutrition can cause:

  • Slow pulse

  • Dizziness and fainting

  • Dehydration

  • Weakened bones (osteoporosis) and weakened muscles

  • Poor concentration and inattention

  • Mood changes and inflexible thinking

  • Interruption of menses

  • Constipation, gastrointestinal problems

  • Electrolyte disturbances

  • Fatigue, weakness

  • Brittle nails

  • Dry hair, hair loss

  • Lack of appetite

  • Low iron or thyroid levels

  • Feeling cold all the time

  • Fine body hair growth

  • Muscle weakness

  • Weakened immune system

  • Poor wound healing

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Swollen feet
