This evidence‑based eLearning program supports dietitians working with children and adolescents with eating disorders in hospital settings. It provides guidance on nutrition management, intervention, review, education, and discharge planning, with practical activities and videos relevant across paediatric medical, mental health, and specialist settings. Developed by paediatric dietitians and people with lived experience, the course empowers dietitians and families as young people transition from hospital to community care. As a result, young people and their families can access evidence‑based support from inpatient dietetic services across NSW.
Background: The Nutrition Management of Children and Adolescents with Eating Disorders in the Inpatient Setting is an evidence-based eLearning program for dietitians working with young people with an eating disorder in a hospital setting.
Aims: The course guides dietitians through nutrition management and intervention, ongoing review, nutrition education and discharge planning with practical activities and videos. Course content focuses on the admission to a general paediatric medical ward when the person is medically unstable, however, it is also relevant for the care of a young person admitted to a mental health or eating disorder specialty setting.
Outcomes: This evidence-based eLearning was created by experienced paediatric dietitians and people with lived experience of an eating disorder and their carers and holds the care provided to the young person and their families front and centre. This elearning guides dietetic intervention during an admission and the role of the dietitian in empowering parents and carers as they prepare for the step out of hospital into ongoing community care.
Impact: Young people and their families that present to their local hospital will be able to access evidence based care and support from the Dietitians involved in the inpatient service.
This training is free for all NSW Health staff.
