NSW Health launches the new Service Plan for People with Eating Disorders, 2021 – 2025

5 Aug, 2021

The Service Plan, to be implemented over 5 years, will continue to build, and progress on the foundations that were set in the initial Service Plan. It will make a huge difference to individuals and their families, by decreasing mortality rates, increasing remission rates, decreasing hospital admissions, and improving their whole experience of care.

NSW Health is working toward ensuring every person with an eating disorder will be identified and supported to receive the care they need, wherever they enter the health system.

The treatment of eating disorders is a key priority for the NSW government. Increased investment in eating disorders treatment has strengthened frontline eating disorders services to deliver person–centred mental health and medical care for people with eating disorders, their families and carers.

"The things that are most problematic when you have a child with an eating disorder is someone not looking at the whole child. So, the mental health professionals are just looking at the mental health. The general medical people are just looking at the physical side and no one seems to look at the whole picture particularly well" Briony, carer.

With the adoption of the new Service Plan, InsideOut Institute hopes to see an increase in transparent pathways to early intervention of eating disorders that leads to a genuine change.

"I wouldn’t be here today without the nurses, the medical doctors, the psychologists, the psychiatrists, the social workers, the occupational therapists, the physiotherapists, the play therapists and my family and friends and I thank all of those people so sincerely for everything they have done for me" Izzy, lived experience.

InsideOut Institute would like to see an increase in access to evidence based care for all people, resulting in less people falling through the gaps.

The Service Plan aims to embed eating disorders service provision as core business for Local Health Districts and Specialty Health Networks and will continue to build workforce capacity and strengthen pathways to care across the continuum of eating disorders treatment.

"I’m proud that she got to finish school and she go to university and that she is doing nursing and that she is inspired by some of the nurses who looked after her when she was in hospital, especially those paediatric nurses that looked after her during her treatment as an adolescent. I’m most proud of the young person she’s becoming" Briony, carer.

We want to make sure every person with an eating disorder will be identified and supported to receive the care they need, wherever they enter the health system.
